Posted on 05:46 by Unknown

image

On 5 September 2012, UNPA  issued a set of six commemorative stamps in denominations of US$ 0.45, US$ 1.05, CHF 0.85, CHF 1.00, € 0.62 and € 0.70, on the theme " World Heritage – Africa ".

Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural heritage and our natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. What makes the concept of World Heritage exceptional is its universal application. World Heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located.

Date of Issue : 5 September 2012

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. The Indian National Flag unfurled through Philately

By Sekhar Chakrabarti

Flag 2

author A new book by noted philatelist Mr Sekhar Chakrabarti, "The Indian National Flag unfurled through Philately" has just been published by Niyogi Books, New Delhi.

This book in the form of possibly the first and only authoritative book on the history of the Indian National flag, exposed through philatelic articles, till date.... This book is a must-read for those who are interested in Indian history and those who are curious about the Indian National flag, its background, development and true meaning...

For details Contact : Niyogi Publishers website : http://www.niyogibooks.com/

Prof Bharati Roy, Vice President, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Govt of India says, "Sekhar Chakrabarti's innovative book "The Indian National Flag unfurled through Philately" tells us the fascinating history of the Indian flag through the medium of stamps. It is a fine blend of painstaking research and a dedicated pursuit of philately. The stamps reveal a visual message from the past and the text lucidly transports us through the process by which the Indian national flag had its birth. I congratulate the author for giving us this treasure of a book".
Prof. Dipak Ranjan Das, Former Professor & Head, Dept. of Ancient History & Culture, Calcutta University, Member: West Bengal Heritage Commission says;  “Mr Sekhar Chakrabarti, an acclaimed philatelist, has taken upon himself the challenging task of narrating the history of Indian flags from the days of yore, deriving information from an unconventional source. It is like the bow of Ulysses which could not be drawn by any weaker hand. He weaves the colourful history of Indian flags gathering data primarily from philatelic materials. The successful completion of this daring venture earns for Mr Chakrabarti a permanent niche in the world of historians engaged in vexillological research”.

Hanukkah

Hi !

Here are two beautiful stamps  to be issued by Israel Post in December this year.Israel Post will issue this  set of two stamps to commemorate 20 years of Diplomatic Relations with India featuring Festivals of Lights in India  ( Deepawali ) and Israel ( Hanukkah ) .

This is a wonderful set, a great delight  for Indians !! My sincere thanks to Dr Eli Moallem of Jerusalem for this Post !!

Festival of Lights in Israel and India

image

Hanukkah Menorah

Hanukkah also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple  in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.

The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a unique candelabrum, the nine-branched Menorah or Hanukiah, one additional light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. The typical Menorah consists of eight branches with an additional raised branch. The extra light is called a shamash  and is given a distinct location, usually above or below the rest. The purpose of the shamash is to have a light available for use, as using the Hanukkah lights themselves is forbidden.

Diyas ( Olil lamps) of Deepawali

Diwali  or Deepavali, popularly known as the "festival of lights," is a festival celebrated between mid-October or mid- November . For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes with crackers and lighting oil lamps and candles.

The name "Diwali" is a contraction of "Deepavali" which translates into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. .

Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, along with Sita and Lakshman, from his 14-year-long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas and by bursting firecrackers.

Today is World Tourism Day. It is being celebrated under the theme “Tourism & Sustainable Energy : Powering Sustainable Development “. Official celebrations will take place in Maspalomas, Spain  today on Sept 27.

This year’s theme aims to highlight tourism’s role in a brighter energy future; a future in which the world’s entire population has access to modern, efficient and affordable energy services.

Tourism, one of the world’s largest economic sectors, has already taken important steps towards this future – improving energy efficiency and increasingly using renewable energy technologies in its operations. These steps are creating jobs, lifting people out of poverty and helping to protect the planet.

Lighthouses on New Norwegian stamps…

Posted on 22:41 by Unknown

image

Date of Issue : 15 June 2012

Hi !

Here are the two most beautiful stamps with Lighthouses..The picture shown on these Norwegian stamps are just wonderful with mist in the background…These are in the Oslo Fjord. These stamps are perhaps showing the most beautiful view of these light hoses !! It is a delight for those collecting stamps on Light houses !!

Kavringen Lighthouse was built in 1892 and is located on Søndre Kavringdyne, a group of skerries in the western seaward approach to the Port of Oslo. There had previously been two lighthouses in the Oslo harbour basin, Heggholmen and Dyna, situated in the old main sea lane. Towards the end of the 19th century, however, larger vessels began to prefer the western lane between Kavringen and Hovedøya, round Vippetangen and into Bjørvika. After DS Norge ran aground on the Kavringen skerries in 1890, there was a cry for better lighting in the western approach. The Kavringen lighthouse was completed and operational only two years later. Until 1956, when both lighthouses were automated and the job of lighthouse keeper became redundant, the lighthouse keeper on Dyna was also responsible for Kavringen. On 15 May (St. Hallvard’s Day), as part of Oslo’s millennium celebrations in 2000, a time capsule made of titanium was bolted to the inside of the lighthouse. The time capsule is designed like the lighthouse’s lantern housing and it contains letters and greetings from the citizens of Oslo to people of the future. The capsule cannot be opened until the year 3000.

image

Medfjordbåen is a sunken rock in the middle of the Oslo Fjord, off Slangentangen in the county of Vestfold. Here the lighthouse was built and went into operation in 1876. Medfjordbåen Lighthouse is a familiar rounding mark in the annual Færder Regatta, on the way to Åsgårdstrand and Horten.

Motilal Nehru

scan0010

Date of issue : 25 September 2012

India Post released a stamp of  Motilal Nehru on 25th September 2012 to celebrate his 150th Birth anniversary. Motilal Nehru (6 May 1861 – 6 February 1931) was a lawyer, an activist of the Indian National Movement and an important leader of the Indian National Congress, who also served as the Congress President twice.

: Mansoor B.- Mangalore - Blog :  http://mbstamps.blogspot.in/

This stamp should have been issued by India Post on 6 May, on his birthday !!

NEW DELHI: Launching the commemoration of 150th birth anniversary of Motilal Nehru, President Mr Pranab Mukherjee today said institutions evolved by leaders like him should be strengthened instead of being destroyed.
Paying rich tributes to Motilal, he listed his achievements like his role in evolving of Public Accounts Committee and protecting independence of Legislature from the influence of the Executive by establishing a separate cadre for the Central Legislative Assembly, now Parliament.

Nehru report

Motilal Nehru chaired the famous Nehru Commission in 1928, that was a counter to the all-British Simon Commission. Nehru Report, the first constitution written by Indians only, conceived a dominion status for India within the Empire, akin to Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It was endorsed by the Congress Party, but rejected by more radical Indians who sought complete independence, and by many Muslims who didn't feel their interests, concerns and rights were properly represented.

200th Birth Anniversary of Charles Dickens

Posted on 09:35 by Unknown

image

Date of Issue : 14 September 2012

Gibraltar Post has commemorated the bicentenary of the birth of Charles John Huffam Dickens ( 7 February 1812 - 9 June 1870 ) with a wonderful issue of 4 stamps and a nice miniature sheet. This is one of the finest designs ever created for  miniature sheet  to commemorate an author !!!!

Charles Dickens was an English writer, generally considered to be the greatest novelist of the Victorian period and responsible for some of English literature’s most iconic novels and characters. During his lifetime Dickens’ works enjoyed unprecedented popularity and fame, and they remain popular today. It was in the twentieth century, however, that his literary genius was fully recognized by critics and scholars.

 image

The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print. Some of his most notable works are his novels: ‘The Pickwick Papers’; ‘The Adventures of Oliver Twist’; ‘The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby’; ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’; ‘A Christmas Carol’; ‘Dombey and Son’; ‘David Copperfield’; ‘Bleak House’; ‘Hard Times: For These Times’; ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ and ‘Great Expectations’

Children’s favorite books

The Lichtenstein Post has issued a set of stamps on Literature. The stamps illustrate literary figures which have appealed primarily to young readers and which owe some of their celebrity to splendid and high-budget film versions.

The North German prankster "Till Eulenspiegel" appeared anonymously as early as 1510/1512. Nowadays he is familiar principally in Erich Kastner's rendition.

The figure of the fantasist "Baron Munchhausen" goes back to Hieronymus Carl Friedrich Baron von Munchhausen (1720-1797), who was well-known as a humorous story-teller.

"Robin Hood" is a 13th century English folk hero whose fight with the Sheriff of Nottingham has provided material for countless children's books.

Two other figures from the Anglo-Saxon world are the master detective "Sherlock Holmes" (1887 onwards) created by the Scottish author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the castaway "Robinson Crusoe" (1719) created by the Londoner Daniel Dafoe.

"Hamlet" (1603), the tragic hero of the eponymous tragedy by William Shakespeare, is one of the theatre world's most famous roles. The Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes gave us "Don Quixote" (1605/1615), the Knight of the Woeful Countenance, while "Quasimodo" was the tragic hero of the novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1831) by the French writer Victor Hugo.
